The TAAT Aquaculture compact has noted that fish farmers in Africa are confronted with many challenges in producing catfish. These include a lack of poor-quality fish seed, low skills of fish breeders in BMPs, high fry and fingerling mortality and the lack of knowledge on fish health management among hatcheries.

This manual has been put together to assist extension workers and other trainers in facilitating and delivering improved technologies to catfish breeders to produce fast-growing and healthy fingerlings for profitable ventures.

Development objectives 1) To enhance the productivity of catfish. 2) To increase fish farmers’ income. 3) To improve food (fish) security and nutrition.

Learning objectives 1) To enhance knowledge on broodstock selection, management and artificial breeding methods. 2) To acquire experience of BMPs in a hatchery for increased productivity. 3) To build entrepreneurial skills in business plan development for sustainable hatchery ventures. 4) To learn skills on how to share knowledge with other hatchery operators and fish farmers in their respective areas for increased catfish production.
