Hybrid training on the international and national avenues for the legal empowerment of small-scale fishers

This hybrid training event on human rights and fisheries is co-organised by the One Ocean Hub with the Danish Institute for Human Rights. It aims at supporting generative collaboration between small-scale fishers, researchers, fisheries specialists, environmental NGOs, human rights practitioners and international and national human rights mechanisms to protect the human rights of small-scale fishers.

Webinar: International human rights mechanisms and fisheries

The dialogue series explores how national and international human rights actors are using their respective mandates to promote and protect the rights of small-scale fishers, fish workers and their communities.

The second webinar focuses on protecting the human rights of small-scale fishers through international human rights mechanisms. Representatives from the mechanisms share examples of current advice and recommendations to states in relation to the human rights of small-scale fishers and indigenous peoples. This is followed by discussions on opportunities for deepening their engagement and collaboration on these issues with national human rights institutions, civil society and other key actors.

Webinar: National human rights institutions and fisheries

The dialogue series explores how national and international human rights actors are using their respective mandates to promote and protect the rights of small-scale fishers, fish workers and their communities.

The first webinar focuses on on the role of national human rights institutions (NHRIs). NHRI representatives share examples of applying their NHRI mandate to address the human rights abuses and violations affecting small-scale fishers and indigenous peoples. Other key actors contribute to the following discussion on possible measures for strengthening this engagement.

Customary Law, Tangible & Intangible Heritage, and Ocean Governance Workshops - Workshop 1

This is a recording from the first workshop in One Ocean Hub’s Customary Law, Tangible & Intangible Heritage, and Ocean Governance workshop series. The workshop took place 6 May 2022.

This workshop focused on scene-setting and baseline setting discussing current developments and recent questions surrounding customary laws and tangible / intangible heritage within ocean governance processes.

Exploring Challenges, Opportunities & Alliances for the Protection of Small-scale Fishers’ Human Rights

This two-hours roundtable is organized by the One Ocean Hub with the support and technical assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The event will explore the need for a comprehensive understanding of the human rights of small-scale fishers and how different mandates across the United Nations System can contribute to enhancing the protection of the human rights of small-scale fishers, fisherworkers, and their communities.

Marine-Related Learning Networks: Shifting the Paradigm Toward Collaborative Ocean Governance

This study investigates the emergence, key attributes, and outcomes of marine-related networks using semi-structured interview data from 40 key informants representing 16 different networks that operate around the world at local, national, regional, and global scales. Our findings indicate that marine-related learning networks form in response to knowledge and action gaps and the specific needs of network members, and they function to inform policy and improve ocean management.

A good practice guide for ethical and inclusive communications involving small-scale fisheries

This guide provides practical and simple guidance on how to communicate about small-scale fisheries in an inclusive, responsible and ethical way that respects the 108 million rights holders who depend on small-scale fisheries for food and income. By promoting positive narratives about small-scale fisheries and following good communication practices, we can all contribute to improving food security and nutrition, reducing poverty, and supporting a thriving subsector.

The Great Blue Wall: Good practices for marine and coastal conservation in the Western Indian Ocean

The aim of this PANORAMA Solutions in focus publication is to highlight existing good practices in the WIO region that contribute to the three main objectives of the GBW. Scaling such solutions across the region and integrating these into future planning and investments, as well as supporting knowledge exchange amongst key actors to build on “what works”, will all be key to achieving the ambitious goal of the GBW.

This publication focuses on 46 PANORAMA Solutions from the WIO region that provide a good representativity of the range of actions delivering tangible outcomes and that are promising for further development. We first classified them according to the GBW’s three components. We then identified their contributions to ecosystem health, human well-being or both, based on the description provided in the solutions’ impact section.
